The Unionized staff of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) intensified their grievances against management on Friday, May 1, 2026, staging a protest during the International Workers’ Day celebrations at Jackson Park in the Eastern Region.

They simultaneously accused the National Media Commission (NMC) of failing to act on allegations of mismanagement by the Director-General, Prof. Amin Alhassan.

The protesting workers, who joined other labour groups to mark the annual May Day event, carried placards expressing what they described as deep frustration over the deteriorating state of the Corporation, blaming it on poor leadership and alleged inaction.

Some of the placards read “Professor Amin is a problem to GBC,” “Audit GBC IGF now,” and “GBC is collapsing under Professor Amin Alhassan,” while others appealed directly to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and provide strategic leadership to salvage the national broadcaster.

Their public demonstration follows a letter dated April 28, 2026, jointly issued by the Senior Management Staff and Divisional Unions of GBC, in which they decried what they termed the NMC’s silence on demands for the Director-General to step aside over allegations of mismanagement and financial malfeasance.

According to the Unions, it has been nearly two months since they engaged the Finance and Administration Subcommittee of the Commission, following a press briefing at which they formally called for Prof. Alhassan to step aside pending investigations.

The Unions disclosed that they submitted all requested documents to the subcommittee and were assured that further engagements, including a meeting with the Director-General, would be arranged.

However, they noted that no feedback has been received, a situation they interpreted as a lack of interest in addressing the concerns raised and the broader development of the state broadcaster.

They expressed disappointment at the Commission’s failure to direct the Director-General to step aside to allow a forensic audit, insisting that such a move is necessary to restore GBC’s credibility and operational efficiency.

The Unions further revealed that they had earlier drawn the Commission’s attention to issues surrounding a forensic audit of the All-African Games by the Auditor-General, as well as a pending forensic audit into GBC’s finances during Prof. Alhassan’s tenure.

Citing what they described as continued inaction, the Unions warned that they would pursue all lawful measures to “rescue the Corporation,” stressing that they would not be held responsible for any consequences arising from the situation.

They underscored their position with a quote from Desmond Tutu, stating, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”

The April 28 letter was jointly signed by the Chairman of the GBC Divisional Union, Ebenezer Odzewu, and the Chairman of the GBC Local Union, Sam Nat Kevor, and copied to the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, the Chairman of the Finance and Administration Committee of the NMC, and the General Secretary of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU).

Meanwhile, the Unions’ concerns also appear to align with earlier official correspondence from the Office of the President.

In a letter dated December 9, 2025, signed by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, and addressed to the Auditor-General’s Department, the Presidency requested a review and appropriate action on a petition by the General Secretary of the PSWU, Bernard Adjei, regarding a forensic audit of the 13th All-African Games.

The letter conveyed President Mahama’s directive to the Auditor-General to take the necessary steps on the matter, further underscoring growing concerns about financial accountability in public institutions.
